In a recent
ceremony at fire headquarters, the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce
presented a check for $2,639 to firefighters to be used to purchase
bike helmets for children. The money was half the proceeds from the Buy
a Brick Program, which has been in the works since last year. The other
half is going to the Quinnipiac Education Foundation for
scholarships
for North Haven High School students. Chamber President Robin Wilson
also presented a plaque commemorating the program to the department
that will be installed by the building entrance.
The 150 bricks, which are engraved
with various names of deceased firefighters, organizations, and
families, have been installed in a walkway in front of the building.
There’s room for more bricks at a cost of $60 each, said Liz Davis of
the Chamber; call the Chamber at 203-234-0332 for donation information.
Organizations that donated services
or materials for the program include Sign Lite of North Haven, Nolan’s
Hamden Monument Co., and Nicolock of North Haven. In a second ceremony,
a similar plaque was presented to the police department for the
2007-’08 Buy a Brick Program in which the purchase of some 300 bricks
benefited the DARE drug education program.
